Royal Ahrend joins the leading circular economy platform of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation as CE100 member

  • Royal Ahrend takes the next step in its ambition to implement a circular economy approach, by joining the Ellen MacArthur Foundation as a Circular Economy 100 (CE100) corporate member.
  • The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is a global thought leader on the circular economy. It aims to accelerate the transition to a circular economy and build a framework for an economy that’s restorative and regenerative by design.
  • Through its CE100 membership, Royal Ahrend aims to develop a project which offers furniture as a service rather than an asset.

As a CE100 member, Royal Ahrend joins global corporate frontrunners, like Nike, H&M, Renault and Google, to collaborate and develop circular economy opportunities. Through the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Royal Ahrend aims to grow its expertise and network, collaborate with other experts, partners and CE100 members to promote the circular economy and unlock business opportunities.

Eugène Sterken, CEO Royal Ahrend; ‘We see this membership as a powerful tool to accelerate our transition towards a circular economy and help realize our aspirations in adopting a fully circular solution – keeping products at their highest value and utility, feeding them back into the system and achieving zero waste. After all, the most sustainable product is a timeless, beautiful, modular product that does not have to be disposed or disassembled, but can ‘just’ be reused’.

The transition towards a circular economy has evolved from Royal Ahrend’s business operations over the past 25 years. In 1994 the organisation designed the first recyclable task chair, in 2011 it was recognised as the first and only Cradle to Cradle company in the furniture industry and in 2015 Royal Ahrend hired over 180 disabled people to produce school furniture. Therefore is Royal Ahrend, with its knowledge and experience, capable of making a valuable contribution to the CE100 network.

“In bringing together leaders and innovators from around the world, the CE100 network aims to unlock new opportunities for change and growth. We look forward to welcoming Ahrend to the CE100 to share its experiences and to explore opportunities for collaboration amongst a growing network.” Casper Jorna – CE100 Programme Lead

Furniture as a service

Royal Ahrend is one of the pioneers in the circular economy, where waste does not exist and materials are reused endlessly. As part of its work on circular economy, Royal Ahrend is ahead of schedule to close the production loop by 2020. It has already initiated education programmes to inform the next generation, and has begun introducing a new circular business model: furniture as a service, which was trialed and implemented at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s office in the UK.
